September 2009 Our goals/standards. The Inn-goer's Bill of Rights The right to suitable cleanliness: An establishment that looks, feels, and smells immaculate, with no musty, smoky, or animal odors. The right to suitable room furnishings: A firm mattress, soft pillows, fresh linens, and ample blankets; bright lamps and night tables on each side of the bed; comfortable chairs with good reading lights; and adequate storage space. The right to comfortable, attractive rooms: Guest rooms and common rooms that are liveable as they are attractive. Appealing places where you'd like to read, chat, relax. The right to a decent bathroom: Cleanliness is essential, along with reliable plumbing, ample hot water, good lighting, and accesible electrical outlet, space for toiletries and thirsty towels. The right to privacy and discretion: Privacy must be respected by the innkeeper and ensured by adequate sound proofing.
The right to discretion precludes questions about marital status or sexual preference. No display of proselytizing religious materials. The right to good healthful food: Fresh nutritious food, ample in quantity, attractively presented, and graciously served in smoke-free surroundings. The right to comfortable temperatures and noise levels:Rooms should be cool in the summer and warm in the winter, with windows that open, and quiet, efficient air-conditioning and heating. Double windows, drapes, and landscaping are essential if traffic noise is an issue. The right to fair value: Prices should be in reasonable relation to the facilities offered and to the cost of equivalent local accommodation. The right to genuine hospitality: Innkeepers who are glad to see you've come and who make it their business to make your stay pleasant and memorable; who are readily available without being intrusive. The right to a caring environment: Welcoming arrivals with refreshments, making dinner reservations, providing information on activities, asking about pet allergies and dietary restrictions, and so on.The right to professionalism: Brochure requests, room reservations, check-ins and check-outs handled efficiently and responsibly. The right to adequate common areas: At least one common room where guests can gather to read, chat or relax free of obligation to buy anything. The right of people travelling alone to have all the above rights: Singles usually pay just a few dollars less than couples, yet the welcome, services and rooms they receive can be inferior. The right to a reasonable cancellation policy: Penalties for cancellation made fewer than 7-14 days before arrival are relatively standard. Most Inns will refund deposits(minus a processing fee) after the deadline only if the room is rebooked. (Please see our deposit/refund policy at the bottom of every page.)The right to efficient maintenance: Burnt out light bulbs and worn out smoke detector batteries are the responsiblity of the innkeeper-not the guest. When things go wrong, guests have the right to an apology, a discount or a refund. We thank Sandra W. Soule, Quoted from America's Favorite Inns, B&Bs and small hotels
*Feels like home..
B&B owners are welcoming you into their homes and you are treated like a family friend. Any special needs are always considered.
*A change of scene..
B&B's are in unusual homes or locales. You can experience different places. Rooms are often decorated differently so you can go more than once to the same B&B.
*Individual treatment..
B&B hosts like people and they want you to leave happy and satisfied. Personal attention is automatic and genuinely enjoyed by your hosts. There are always guidlines and policies but unlike a hotel, we never say no to reasonable requests. An example is a 3 am hot tub dip.
*Extra service and amentities...
Great B&B's are filled with extra's that you are not charged for. Internet access, parking, local calls, use of library-movies, books, games, music, binoculars, snow shoes, tobbogans, and much more.
*Helpful knowledge...
If you want to know the area you are visiting your host has the known history and some unknown insights into the area to share with you if you choose. The time we have to share is always at your discretion.
* A yard/outdoor space
To sun yourself or sit in the shade. Read a book, watch birds, smell the flowers or whatever you choose.
GEOTHERMAL is AIRCONDITIONING AND CLEANER HEAT. ON NOW!!! June 23, 2011
A Geothermal system will harness free, renewable energy and provide an environmentally friendly way to heat and cool our home. It is the environmental equivalent of planting an acre of trees or removing two cars from the road. It captures the stable temperature of the earth to heat and cool your home, resulting in consistant and comfortable heating and cooling. A high efficiency electrostatic air cleaner will filter dust and pollen from the air to keep a good standard in clean air quality! We are looking forward to enhanced comfort, safety, and quiet operation of this new system as well as future cost savings!(up to 60% off our current bills) It's set up in the ground. We are Looking forward to a cleaner heat and air conditioning throughout including helping out or enviornment just a teeny bit!
What is a B&B?
A bed and breakfast (or B&B) is a small lodging establishment that offers overnight accommodation and breakfast but usually does not offer other meals. Typically, bed and breakfasts are private homes with fewer than 10 bedrooms available for commercial use.
Generally, guests are accommodated in private bedrooms with private bathrooms, or in a suite of rooms including an en suite bathroom. Some homes have private bedrooms with a bathroom which is shared with other guests. Breakfast is served in the bedroom, a dining room, or the host's kitchen.
B&Bs and guest room may be operated either as a secondary source of income or a primary occupation. Usually the owners themselves prepare the breakfast and clean the room etc., but some bed and breakfasts hire staff for cleaning or cooking. Although some bed and breakfast owners hire professional staff, a property which hires professional management is usually no longer considered a bed and breakfast, but enters the category of Inn or hotel.
Many B&Bs in North America try to create a historical ambiance, with old properties turned into guest houses decorated with antique furniture. B&B and Inn owners have been launching upscale amenities to improve business and move "up-market." It is not uncommon now to find free wireless Internet access, free parking, spa services, or nightly wine and cheese hours. Due to the need to stay competitive with the rest of the lodging industry, larger bed and breakfast inns have expanded to offer wedding services, business conference facilities, and meeting spaces as well as many other services a large hotel might offer.
The custom of opening one’s home to travellers dates back the earliest day of Colonial America. Lodging establishments were few and far between in the 18th century, and apart from a limited number of coaching inns (a few of which survive as inns today), wayfarers relied on the kindness of strangers to provide a bed for the night. Hotels became more common with the advent of the railroad, and later, the automobile, and most towns had at least one prominent hotel.
During the Great Depression, tourist homes provided an economic advantage to both the traveller and the host. Driving through town (no Interstates then), travellers stopped at houses with signs reading Tourists or Guests, indicating that travellers could rent a room for the night for about $2. The money generated needed income for the home owner and saved money for the traveller.
After World War II, middle-class Americans began travelling in Europe in large numbers, many experiencing the European-style B&Bs (Zimmer frei in Germany, chambres d’hotes in France) for the first time. Some were inspired to open B&Bs in the U.S.; tourist home owners updated their properties as B&Bs.
Through the 1980s and 1990s, B&Bs increased rapidly in numbers and evolved from homestay B&Bs with shared baths and a simple furnishings to beautifully renovated historic mansions with luxurious décor and amenities.
The next big change started in the mid 1990s when the Internet became a major marketing force, making it affordable for innkeepers to promote their properties worldwide. Email marketing, in particular, serves as a useful tool for the Bed & Breakfast industry, for it proactively builds relationships with the existing guests after their stay.
This helps increase the likelihood for more repeat bookings and also guest referrals in the future. At present, travellers research and book B&B online, checking out detailed photos, videos, and reviews. B&Bs are found in all states, in major cities and remote rural areas, occupying everything from modest cottages to opulent mansions, and in restored structures from schools to cabooses to churches.

OUR OLD BEAUTY OF A BARN, RIP AUGUST 2011.

Unfortunately a very windy day and a brush fire spread quickly to take away a favourite haunt. (cause still unknown)
A summer bedroom and workshop upstairs in the loft and the bottom was almost cleared out and ready for some renovations, to house the better quality antiques that my husband collects and sells burnt to the ground this summer.
We did lose a fair amount of property but thank goodness no life was lost. Have some insurance and hope to get a building of some sort for the same purposes.
Got to fight some fast moving flames headed to our neighbours campground and the house.
The old fashioned bucket pass water train worked fairly well. The stage still stands but all around the grounds are black. We all worked hard and put a halt to any more destruction. Special thanks to those of you that sweated and worked so hard and of course the awesome firefighters who came and moved fast to dowse the barn, but it was a very dry old barn and took only 10 minutes or so to burn completely down to twisted debris and unrecognizable black guts.
